Sequence of Asana Pranayama and Meditation

What is the right order of practicing Asana, Pranayama, and Meditation, What should be performed first?

Do you also have the similar questions like what should be practiced first Asana, Pranayama or Meditation? What is the right sequence or order to practise Asana, Pranayama, and Meditation?

Hatha Yoga Pradipika commentary by Swami Muktibodhananada (Yoga Publications Trust, Munger, Bihar, India) explains these questions as below:

After asanas, pranayama should be practised to purify the nadis. For this purpose nadi shodhana (nadi purification) pranayama is best. Then mudras should be performed to channelize the energy and create specific attitudes of mind, and bandhas to force the energy upward. In hatha yoga the sequence is - Asanas first, then Pranayama, Mudras and Bandhas. Lastly one should sit quietly in a meditative pose.

In the systematic science of Hatha Yoga, you must firstly prepare the physical body because it is the grossest manifestation of prana. Activate the prana through asana, then practise pranayama to purify the energy channels and to process and balance the prana. Then perform mudras to channelize the prana and arouse different faculties of the mind, and bandhas to draw prana upward from the lower centres. When the full capacity of prana or shakti is released, the high vibrational rate creates an audible sound in the inner ear. If you can hear it, it is sure sign that kundalini has awakened.

  1. Hi Raj,
I know that some yoga schools practice in a different order.
I tried everything. Beside any given rules, it feels better to do asanas first and meditation last. One further reason is that after the asanas it's easy to sit in lotus pose for some time. I am no more distracted by any pain caused from sitting.

  8. Yes the sequence is ok. I have been practicing in the same order for more than 30 years. Before Asanas, Pranayama n Meditation we practice Sukshma (Micro) vyayama, simple basic exercises standing for all parts of the body beginning from eye, mouth, neck, shoulder, upper hand, elbows, lower hand, wrists, palms, finger tips, upper chest, middle chest, lower chest, for stomach -kapalabathi, agnisara, udyana bandh, nouli, followed by few exercises for each waist, hips, thighs, knee joints, calves, ankles, foot, leg fingers. After completing this series we go for Surya Namaskar (Sun salutations) and go for Shavaana before we start Asanas first asanas lying back, second asanas lying on abdoman, third asanas on knees, at the end sitting asanas. Go for short rest - shavasana again and then do 8 items of Pranayama/bhandas/mudras coupled - Bhastrika, Kapalabhati, Maha Bandh, Agni Sara, Ujjai, Udgeeth, Anuloma Viloma and last Udgeeth followed by few minutes of Meditation and close with Shanti Mantras. All these we take 1 hour and 30 minutes.
